Promoting sustainable living: The story of Anagha; One Little Earth
Have you ever stepped into a shop and instantly felt elated with all the natural fragrance and earthy feeling?
Well, if you haven’t, I know the perfect place to go! One Little Earth, located in Tripunithura, Kochi, is a small organic store that has a variety of sustainable products. As the name says, they are trying to bring the best aspects of the world into one place.
One Little Earth is owned by Anagha, a filmmaker and a writer who wants to do more for the world we all live in. So her story goes like this!
Anagha Unni: The Filmmaker
After completing her bachelor’s degree from St. Theresas College, Anagha quickly started working with production houses to pursue her passion for filmmaking. She had even assisted in 2 movies before she decided to take filmmaking more seriously. So she flew all the way to Sydney to attend an intensive film-making course at the Sydney Film School.
The course gave her opportunities to learn and explore a lot in the area of her interest. Soon after the course, she returned to India to do a short film documentary based on a 25 yeard old Tribal Hospital named Tribal Health Initiative.
Porgai is another short film and one of Anagha’s treasured achievements where she speaks about the Lambadi woman and their struggles to keep their art alive. They are a group of people who aim for an organic way of living. The experience introduced her to an organic and sustainable lifestyle.
One Little Earth
As someone who believed in sustainability and wrote aggressively about it, Anagha felt she was not exactly doing much about it. This is a realization that gave birth to One Little Earth. Her aim is very simple: Make sustainable products easily available and affordable to people who have the privilege to buy them.
At One Little Earth, you can find all the basic items you need to take your baby steps into sustainability. To switch completely can be difficult but to transition as much as possible seems to be a more practical option. Here you can find natural spices, organic millets, homemade snacks, and even sustainable cosmetics and sanitary products.
One thing you should know is that organic products are not just for your health but also for preserving nature. The more organic they are, the less harmful it is to the environment.
Nilam
For her love of art forms, Anagha has also expanded One Little Earth to dedicate some space for art and cultural events. In this space called Nilam, she organizes small events and exhibitions that promote interesting yet vanishing cultural events.
Anagha hosts a Whatsapp community of around 400 people who are the major audience for all the events that are conducted at Nilam. A small and closed space, Nilam and One Little Earth combine to give you a feeling of belongingness.
Hinterland Village Resort
One of the major factors that have influenced her to focus on organic lifestyles and sustainability is perhaps her childhood that was deeply connected with nature. She grew up in a village, where her family owns vast lands among trees, birds, and various wonders of nature. Her affinity towards all these is deep and keeps pulling her back to the roots.
The area that her family owns is currently a Yoga Retreat Center that can host up to 25 people. Visitors, usually foreigners, come here to relax, revive and rekindle their relationship with nature. Hinterland Village Resort gives the kind of experience that you can’t get anywhere else in the world.
Responsible Consumerism To Build A Better Earth
Anagha doesn’t preach any ideology but she does feel that a little bit of responsible buying attitude can make a big difference. Know what you are contributing to and try to do good whenever possible. She is not trying to change the world because she knows it’s not practical. All she is trying to achieve is a sense of satisfaction and knowing that she has done her part to make the world a little better than she found it.
One Little Earth is one among Anagha’s many many steps towards promoting sustainable living. Along with brushing up her film-making career, she just hopes to provide an opportunity for everyone to experience a sustainable and healthier life!
A little more time until her new viable idea comes to life! What could it be?
